Introduction to Erotic Dance

Introduction to Erotic Dance: History and Who is it for

Follow and Subscribe

Hi, welcome to Boudoir Wellness, I am Esterotica the creator of Boudoir Wellness and this is my first post on it. The main purpose here is to popularize burlesque and exotic dance as a workout and a tool to enhance femininity. With that said I would like to start with an introduction to erotic dance by summarizing:

  • What does erotic dance stand for?
  • How did it change over the last decades?
  • Who could erotic dance workouts, and exotic pole dance be beneficial for?
  • What is Boudoir Gym?

What is erotic dancing?

Erotic dancing is often used as a synonym for stripping which you probably know is dancing nude for money.

The term exotic dancer is often used as a synonym for a stripper. Although there is an overlap between exotic dance and erotic dance it isn’t necessarily ends with stripping off

There is another thing I would like to highlight here.

Although stripping is a form of exotic dancing, that does not mean that erotic dancing ends up being nude in all cases. The fact as Erotic dance has the word of dance it suggests the combination of suggestive yet well-prepared dance moves.

As a result in a lot of cases, erotic dance is more like the art of stripteases, such as neo-burlesque, single exotic pole shows, or chair dance shows.

That could also explain the fact why many pole dancing schools opened in the last decade where dedicated teachers tried to share their expertise with students. Furthermore, there are also professional exotic dance and pole dance competitions available around the world where enthusiastic and -physically trained -dancers showcase their expertise.

But this is more like the 21st century. So let’s go back in time and take a look at how erotic dancing and pole dancing has got to this point where it is now.

The PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE

This might be shocking, but the start of erotic dance and pole dance was not in the local strip clubs with rock & roll music in the 80s.

ANCIENT HISTORY

Erotic dance has been around as long as humanity has been. There is evidence from 20,000 in France – through Paleolithic cave paintings- that erotic dance is probably older than you. 😊 The Black Sea regions of Bulgaria and Romania also revealed proof of the erotic dance’s existence from 9000 years ago in form of erotic dancers’ miniature statuettes. In the beginning – in ancient Greece and Rome – dancers performed erotic dance in churches in honor of the Moon and making money did not play a role in this game. (1.)

MIDDLE AGES

In the 14th century when BELLY DANCING got popular in the Middle East that was the beginning of dancers getting compensated for their efforts by being tossed coins from the audience.

MODERN ERA

The Strip-tease started to become popular in the brothels in London, in the 18th century. This type of entertainment included a naked dance -performed by the ’posture girls’- on tables for the especially male audience.

The origin of the modern striptease is lied in Oscar Wilde’s play of Salome with the erotic dance of the SEVEN VEILS which is based on the standard erotic moves of modern burlesque. One of the first private dances was performed to King Edward VII., by an early burlesque practitioner, Maud Allan in 1907. (2.)

THE FRENCH MOULIN ROUGE

The Moulin Rouge is the most popular one of the first adult entertainment establishments in late 19th century of France. Back in time, a usual performance in the Moulin Rouge covered a woman who slowly removed her clothes while looking for a flea that was crawling on her body. Germaine Aymos – a Moulin Rouge dancer- made a gigantic show in 1907 by entering the scene in only 3 small shells. But probably the first burlesque performer who most of us remember is Josephine Baker – a semi-nude dancer – from the 1930s. Josephine was popular for her sophisticated moves while wearing sequins. In the 1960s another famous french cabaret establishment started to give fully nude shows, which was the Le Crazy Horse Saloon. (2.)

EROTIC DANCE IN BRITAIN

The start of official adult entertainment was when the world-famous Windmill Theater started to present shows in the 1930s. Since British law did not allow moving whilst being naked at that time there were only naked models in tableaux vivants. They were the famous Windmill Girls, who presented motionless poses naked. Another way to get around the law was to perform fan dances. During the fan dance, the dancer’s body was hidden by her fans up until she got nude and stayed still in a pose.

In the 1960s the law changed and finally naked shows become life in Soho, where strip clubs started to operate.

AMERICAN STRIPTEASE

The erotic dance in the US started with burlesque theaters and with traveling cabaret shows in the late 19th century.

In the early 20th century there were a few milestones in erotic dancing, such as:

  1. Minsky Burlesque Show in 1925 inspired the novel and movie: The Night They Raided Minsky.
  2. Hinda Wassau’s shimmy dance whilst her costume was shaken loose

Such as in Britain in New York burlesque theatres were prohibited from performing naked shows. However, the rule might have been different in other states where dancers were allowed to get fully nude.

In the 1960s the topless gogo started to get popular and Carol Doda from the Condor Night Club -in San Francisco North Beach – was the first topless gogo dancer. The Condor Night Club was that very place that started nude entertainment, when Doda went bottomless on September 3, 1969. Afterward San Francisco was the heart of many world-famous adult entertainment venues such as the Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre.

Lap dancing started in the 1980s and also opened up many strip clubs. That way when we hear the word stripping we often refer to the local American topless venues in the 80s.

TODAY: THE RISE OF POLE DANCING

Pole dancing along with modern-styled lap dances and table dances appeared in the late 20th century in Canadian gentlemen’s clubs. One of these clubs formed world-famous franchise corporations such as the Spearmint Rhino which started in North America and then appeared in the UK, Australia, and other European countries.

Not long after in the 1990s Fawnia Mondey – a former Canadian pole dancer who moved to Las Vegas – started to teach pole dance. Ever since pole dancing schools started to open up and the popularity of pole dance has been growing.

A number of pole dance and pole sports competitions are existing, such as the World Pole Sport Championship, U.S. Pole Federation Championship, Pole Art, Miss Pole Dance America, and the International Pole Masters Cup Championship.

In 2016 the IPSF (International Pole Sports Federation) initiated an application to the International Olympic Committee to acknowledge the pole as a regular sport. (3.)

So if we are thinking about the future of pole dance then we can be certain that more and more people will accept or even celebrate its existence.

Recently a lot of celebrities – such as Rihanna, Cardi B, or JLO – feature this dance in their music videos.

Almost every women include this type of entertainment in their bachelorette parties, and pole dancing classes are at their peakiest point.

And by talking about women at pole dance classes let’s sum up who could benefit from this type of dance or workout, AKA Boudoir Gym.

Is erotic dance a workout?

I experienced pole dance and exotic dance from the student and professional sides. As a result of my experience, I have an idea of who could benefit from this workout, hobby, or profession to be a dancer a lot!

9 to 5 female corporates & stay-at-home moms

When I first get acquainted with pole dancing I had a 9 to 5 job and I started my whole pole dancing journey at that point.

The reason why I think exotic pole dance, an erotic dance workout, or cardio burlesque workouts are great in this case, is because

  • If you live a sedentary lifestyle you need to work out to stay in shape and avoid lower back pain
  • Since all of them work on your core muscles they will also strengthen your lower back at the same time
  • If you do a monotonous job an erotic dance workout will give you excitement through multiple challenges and fun
  • It is a great way to lose weight because it does not only make you stronger but you also will have a cardio workout at the same time
  • These sessions will enhance your femininity and sexuality besides getting in shape and having fun with music
